Philosophy - Plato Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Philosophy - Plato - Essay Example Its democracy was on its knees. There was rampant political selfishness in the great City and this greatly angered Plato. He saw justice as the only true remedy to all of the city’s and the entire country’s problems Self satisfaction was rampant owing to the popularity of the Sophistic teachings that dwelled on self satisfaction that turned the society into largely individualistic people. Most people were running for public offices to achieve their own selfish gains and this eventually divided the city into two groups of the haves and the have nots. The culture of individualism became his main target for attacks in his works.Cephalus established the traditional theory of justice. He viewed justice as speaking the truth and paying one’s debt. He viewed justice as identifying with the right conduct. According to Polemarchus, justice consists in giving what is proper to him. He viewed it simply as doing good to friends and harm to enemies. These two views were criticized to great lengths by Plato. He criticized Cephalus’ theory with the view that there may be cases in which his preferred formula may violate the spirit of right; hence it cannot be taken as a sound universal life principal. He poked holes in Polemarchus’ theory by asking hoe this could be applied in a case whereby the friend is only a friend in seeming but in reality was an enemy. He wondered what would happen in this scenario. He concluded that if justice is determined by the relations between two individuals it promoted individualistic principles and ignores the rest of the society. In the allegory of the cave, Plato proposes a group of prisoners that have been bound in the cave all their lives only being able to see the cave walls. The only light is from a fire at the top of the cave. A path runs above and behind them separating them from the fire. People passing by the path have their shadows cast onto the wall viewed by the

Is aptitude a factor in second language acquisition Essay

Is aptitude a factor in second language acquisition - Essay Example Aptitude is defined as being an inherent ability and a capacity for learning that goes beyond intelligence. It is â€Å"a combination of abilities and other characteristics, whether native or acquired, that are indicative of an individual’s ability to learn or develop proficiency in some particular area if appropriate education or training is provided†. Aptitude is most definitely a factor in second language acquisition (SLA). However, the importance of aptitude is also dependent on a number of other factors. It is one of the many variables which play a part in determining the speed and comprehensiveness in which an individual gains fluency in a second language. Factors such as age, education level, motivation and general intelligence are also fundamental to a person’s ability to acquire a second language. The purpose of this essay is to establish just how great a role aptitude plays in SLA and its relationship to other aspects. In order to ascertain this, I will analyze academic works on the subject, before outlining what these works reveal about the function aptitude has in gaining fluency in a second language. In his article, ‘Aptitude and Second Language Acquisition’, Peter Robinson characterizes second language (L2) learning aptitude as â€Å"strengths individual learners have – relative to their population – in the cognitive abilities information processing draws on during L2 learning and performance in various contexts and at different stages†. According to Robinson, neural differences, underlying abilities and SLA processes lie at a ‘subcomputational, physical’ level.

Write a humorous speech ( could be an informative or persuasive Essay

Write a humorous speech ( could be an informative or persuasive speech) - Essay Example I-C-E. These three letters spell out the torment caused by the Frozen Menace. I shall discuss each of them in turn, and ask only that you cast off the blinkers put upon you by those who would see us kept frozen in our positions. Let us see the truth! The only thing worse about getting up on Monday morning to go to a mundane job is getting up on Monday morning to go to a mundane job and be faced with the need to chisel the half-inch-thick layer of ice that coated your car overnight. Add to that the necessity of allotting sometimes double or even triple the normal commute time, as stated by the Rochester Institute of Technology. If a person were to coat your car in such a way, he or she would be charged with some sort of criminal mischief. And if a person were to render a highway unsafe for thousands of people? Surely the arm of the law would not be able to wait to get its hands on such a vandal. Ice, however, is let off scot-free. The double-standard is heart-breaking. After spending a numb-fingered 30 minutes uncovering your door handle with a chiseling fury that would impress even Michelangelo, you now face the rest of the world and its apparent inability to recognize that a) the roads are slick, and b) due to such, they should perhaps hang up their cell phones and slow down a little bit. These poor citizens should not bear the blame wholly, for it is indeed the savage effects of the ice that turns vehicles of transportation into bumper cars. Ices timing is heartless, to say the least. During the holiday season when gifts are being bought and savings are being depleted, ice adds automobile repair to the already over-laden plate (Fiegerman). Accidents need not be only vehicular in nature. Nay, accidents also include those dignity-bruising falls that only happen when there are many witnesses available. Direct bodily harm inflicted upon another would get any person a swift trip to the local jail, even if the victim suffered little more than a

Descriptive writing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Descriptive writing - Essay Example I was afraid that Tim would savor the poison instead of the mice. I removed the vermin poison and substituted them with mouse traps instead. I hide the traps in places where Tim cannot reach them as he would be that curious as to do himself harm by investigating these mouse traps. Tim is a noisy dog. He barks easily at provocation. He barks at strangers who come up to my gate. His bark is worse than his bite. He sounds intimidating but he has never bitten anyone before. The postman tells me that he has butterflies in his stomach when he sees Tim running up to him with his fierce bark. Tim sleeps on a comfortable rug placed at the foot of my doorway just outside my front door. He loves to sleep. Whenever I see him napping on his rug, I am reminded of the adage, let sleeping dogs lie. I will let him sleep for as long as he wants for when he is awake, he is very active and I seldom get a moment of peace and quiet. Tim has the liberty of playing in the garden whenever he likes. He plays by himself and he loves to play everywhere. Tim behaves as though all the world is his playground. Sometimes, I have to tell him to mind his manners when the playing gets rough and out of hand. Tim loves playing with moving objects the best. He is as playful as a young puppy can be. He will chase butterflies and birds.

The Christian Right and Hitler's Nazis Term Paper

The Christian Right and Hitler's Nazis - Term Paper Example It is arguable that there are frightening similarities between the Christian right and Hitler's Nazis. Chris Hedges believe that the move by Christian fundamentalist to takeover the political system is comparable the Hitler’s Nazis2. He observed that when the Christian fundamentalist penetrate the political cycle, opponents of the Christian system would serve as Satan’s agent. Critically, under the Christian dominion, the Ten Commandments act at the values, which Christians should observe. In the same way, Hitler’s Nazis used their commandments to institute political administration. The precepts followed by the Christian fundamentalist will, in the same manner as Hitler’s Nazis abolish trade union, secular law, public schools among other institutions, which do not embrace the Christian virtues. The fear is the precepts the fundamentalists have stood for. The Christian fundamentalists have penetrated their ways into the House of Representatives. Further, th ese fundamentalists hold majority of the seats. Christian fundamentalist movements have demonstrated 80 percent approval to the activities or debates conducted by the House of Representatives3. The House of Representative is critical to social development of the nation because it influences the social order, which the society adapts. This means that when the majority of the house is Christian fundamentalist, then they would pass laws, which will institute the harsh fundamentalist interpretation of the religious movement. Consequently, Americans will be subject to Christian norms. Hedges posit that the foundation of totalitarian movements is economic and personal despair. It is observable that United States is in despair thereby giving chance for Christian fascists to penetrate the political system with the ideologies. These ideologies are similar to Hitler’s Nazis because they do not only purport to restore the society from its sinful nature but argues in favor of the strict Christian virtues. The trends observed in the American job market or the social life needs a solution. However, the argument made by the Christian fascists tends to present a notion that seeks to revamp the current system. Christian Right and neo- conservatives-pragmatic politicos have formed a formidable alliance, which supports the rise of New American World Order System. The fear about the alliance is that the liberals may have the space to or voice their opinions about the political system that the nation should take, but it shall not have powers to institute laws which can protect ordinary individual from the precepts of the Christian fundamentalists. Hedges argued that challenging New World Order System would be hollow because political representatives backing the Christian Right are the majority. This means that opponents of the Christian fascism will not have any opportunity to influence the political system. Some American political leaders have demonstrated that they suppor t the Christian fundamentalists. Hitler’s Nazi used the political power to maim the society and execute its own precepts. While many might view the issue as a far fetched opinion that has no bearing, Hedges has pointed on the influence that the system would have to masses. Ideally, when majority has embraced the precepts of the system, the opponents of the system will be subject to dire criticism. Further, the situation might blow out of proportion because

Essentials of Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4250 words

Essentials of Management - Essay Example The primary problems with the delegation process are the loss of power, the chances of insubordination, loss of accountability and the chances the work may get delayed. These are the various problems of the delegation. Once the job has been delegated, the Manager may fear that the individual may not perform perfectly either due to the lack of resources, money or senses of responsibility. This may ultimately affect the KRA’s of the manager; the other issue may be the insecurity that is present among the managers. The individual who has been entrusted with the job may go on to outperform the Manager. Thereby, these are the problems faced in the delegation process. There are various steps that can be taken to overcome these problems. The main steps are the infusion of responsibility in the individuals to deliver the work on time, and not to have any amount of insubordination. This can be accomplished by the creation of a proper work culture wherein there is an intrinsic sense of responsibility among the individuals. Also, the individuals should be accountable to the work that is performed by them. Building trust in the virtual teams The process of building trust in virtual teams is a multifarious process with multiple layers involved. The steps that I would take to maintain trust are a lot of online meeting between the members so that they can come to know each other. This would mean that a lot of online transactions should be maintained in order to have the optimum level of trust to be maintained among these members. Another important aspect is the acceptance of the cultural differences between the members. Thee should be a lot telephone calls, online chats , video conferencing and common brain storming sessions over the internet. The other important factor is that the members have to complement each others abilities to build up the trust. Business Research Methods Research question- Should the performance bar of a company be constantly raised at the cost of rising levels of stress and attrition? Analysis-In order to survive the current market, the organization should always keep on evolving and changing that would basically mean that the structures are being organizes in such a manner that there is continuous growth in the organization. It should also ensure that the performance levels are always on the top. Given the current levels of the employee attrition and the stress levels, should such a strategy be actively followed within the company Methodology - Data sampling is of primary importance here, the main strategy that has to be adhered to is the population sampling strategy. The sampling frame has also to be fixed since we are dealing with extremely large sensitive amounts of data, the proper identification of each and every individual involved in the data set is extremely important. The type of sampling that has to be followed here is probability sampling. This is extremely important in the light of the data that is being inve stigated. The chances of the selection of each entity in the sample should be more than one. The subdivision of the sampling frame applies is the stratified sampling. The stratified sampling is used to divide the population into the necessary subsets for the analysis. The dependent variables are the frequency of the distribution randomness of the population set, the methodology segregation taken and the variability of the stratified data. The independent variables are the designation, the work level and responsibilities Understanding- The method of the data collection is
